Piano, North York Music Festival concerto winner
Born in 2002, Vanessa Yu began playing the piano at the age of six. She currently studies with Victoria Gimelshtein and is coached regularly by Michael Berkovsky.
Vanessa has received many awards and scholarships for performances at regional, provincial and national competitions. She recently won first prize at the ORMTA GTA Zone Young Artist Competition and second prize at the Canadian Music Competition National Finals. Vanessa has received top honours at the North York Music Festival, Toronto Kiwanis Festival, Markham Music Festival and Unionville Music Academy Competition, as well as awards at the OMFA Provincial Finals. She has performed in numerous galas and concerts, including a performance for the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2019.
In addition to music, Vanessa is a freelance calligrapher and active community volunteer. As a student in the Arts Unionville piano program, she performs regularly as a soloist, collaborative pianist and flautist as well.
