Jeffrey Carl

Canadian/British baritone and Canada Council winner Jeffrey Carl studied with Betty Doroschuk, Louis Quilico, Diane Forlano, at the Chigana di Musica in Siena, and now works regularly with Ermanno Mauro. He started his musical career as an accomplished clarinet soloist and orchestral player at the age of 15.

His British Debut was at the Britten-Pears Festival where he was chosen to sing Ford in Falstaff dir. Renato Capecchi, and The Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall, cond. Willcocks.

He won the American Express Prize for Vocal Excellence for his Scarpia in Tosca at the Holland Park Opera Festival, Di Luna in Il Trovatore, Don Giovanni, Hamlet (Paul Curran dir/Vivienne Westwood), Valentin in Faust, Eugene Onegin, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte (Cond. Gibbons), Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor (Dublin and Scotland), Verdi's Macbeth, Marcello in La Bohème, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana, Escamillo in Carmen, Germont in La Traviata, in Modena, Reggio Emiglia, Pesaro, Pisa, Ravenna, Ferrara, Livorno, Jesi, Nick Shadow in The Rake's Progress live for RAI 2, cond. Neschling, Ping in Puccini's Turandot at the Theatro Municipal, Rio de Janeiro, cond. Barbato, a Showcase Recital at Canada House in London UK with pianist Stephen Ralls, Monforte in Verdi's I Vespri Siciliani in Toronto (Opera in Concert), in Cyprus in Donizetti's Caterina Cornaro, and in Greece at the Megaron in Athens with the Thessaloniki Symphony Orchestra (Verdi Gala, Cond. Michailidis.

In Canada, he created roles in two world-premiere operas by Harry Somers, including La Serinette for CBC and In Search of Zoroaster, by R. Murray Schafer. In London he created three roles in Havergal Brian's The Cenci, Royal Festival Hall (BBC).

His recording include La Bohème with Roberto Alagna and Leontina Vaduva/Pappano EMI, Richard Bonynge's recordings of Lehar's Giuditta (2 roles) with Jerry Hadley and Deborah Riedel, and the Czarevich with Nancy Gustafson for TELARC, a Kurt Weill role in The Firebrand of Florence, and most recently, Lusignano in Donizetti's Caterina Cornaro with Julia Migenes, cond. Richard Bonynge in London (live). In 2008, he released his first commercial solo disc Arias with the National Opera Orchestra of Moldova, cond. Dohotaru.
